Book of the week – A moose in the hoose by Matthew Fitt and James Robertson

We have some of the Scots books by Itchy Coo books.  A Moose in the Hoose is a picture counting book (1-20, 100 and 1000) in Scots.  Each number features  a different creature and describes what they are doing.  Luath especially loves “Eleeven gallus craws, playin heid the baw” (11 self confident crows, playing head the ball).  The picture features eleven crows wearing saltire shorts, each with a football.  I  enjoy reading the Itchy Coo books with Luath, many of the words we do use in our everyday language, interchanged with English or Gaelic but some we don’t use or say often so it is great to be reminded of them.  I will be bringing the other Scots books off the bookshelf so we can look at them this weekend.

We have recently been rereading Chocolate Mousse for Greedy Goose by Julia Donaldson. Which means that often this week Luath has requested A Moose in the Hoose with a Goose.  I can see us making up a song with those words.
(Luath is 26 months)
